Metal Spikes

Step 1:  Choose a base and clasp method using the tutorials on the Collars page.

Step 2:  Turn your material so that the back side is facing upwards.  Use a ruler to draw a line lengthwise through the center of the base so that you can position your items evenly.

Decide how far apart you would like your items to be (I usually place mine at 1/2").  Mark tics along the center line where your studs (or other decorations) will be placed.  You can do this freehand or with a ruler.

Note: most studs are screwbacks, meaning they are designed with a screw in the bottom that screws into the stud to keep it securely in place.

Step 3: Use the leather rotary punch to punch a hole directly on each tick mark.  (I use the 3.2mm punch setting for my 2" spikes from studsandspikes.com).

Step 4: Unscrew the screw from the spike, and push it through the material so that the spiral is extending out the good side of the collar.

Step 5:  Fit the spike into the screw and use a phillips head screwdriver to tighten the screw.  Do not overtighten.

Step 6:  Repeat steps 3 through 6 for each stud until all of your spikes have been placed.

Step 7:  If your collar involves studs or jewels, follow necessary tutorials until collar is complete!

Textured Spikes

Step 1: Lay out a piece of embroidery floss approximately 2" - 3" long.

Step 2: Cover pointer finger and thumb with (Elmers) glue.

Step 3: Rub embroidery floss between fingers.

Step 4: Wrap sticky embroidery floss around spike, pressing it firmly against metal.

Step 5: Repeat until desired number of spikes have been "flossed."

Step 6: Attach small gems or beads to spikes with Elmer's glue, pressing firmly.  Repeat until desired number of spiked have been beaded or gem-ed.

Step 7: Spray or paint spikes with multiple coats of gold paint (I find spraypaint works much better than brushed-on acrylic paint).

Step 8: Repeat until all spikes have been painted to satisfaction, then seal with matte or gloss sealer (costumer's preference).

Step 9: Attach to collar using method described above.

Tips

Attaching studs and gems first is a good idea so that you hand is not hindered by the long spikes.
