Crepe Wool Color Guide

Ironing

Step 1:  Lay braid flat.

Step 2:  Pull gently at end of crepe wool braid to start unraveling.  Use fingers to pull out twine holding braid together until desired length is unraveled (I personally prefer to iron the entire length but others prefer to leave half to be ironed at a later time).

Step 3:  Set iron at fairly high steam (not dry) setting (most irons have a cotton, wool, or linen setting; if this is the case with yours, choose 'wool').

Step 4:   Press iron flat onto end of wool...

Step 5:  ..and begin ironing, squirting steam every few seconds (this greatly helps in removing kinks).

Step 6:  Iron until wool is flat.  Wasn't that easy?
Combing

Step 7:  Put wig on wig head and mark off areas of color.  This is a tentative, not exact, guide, so don't worry about getting it perfect.

Step 8: Cut a 12" section of crepe wool off the ironed section. (Cut a longer length if making a boofy wig such as Tugger, Bombalurina, or Macavity).

Step 9:  Gripping the middle of the section tightly, gently run a comb through the wool, beginning at the end and working your way inward.  About half the wool will come out as you do this.

Step 10: Create a pile for the short, useless pieces, a pile for medium-length pieces (6" - 8") and a pile the long pieces (9" - 12") that remain in your hand.

Note:
put the long pieces away where they won't become tangled or blown by a breeze (pressing them in a book is a good idea).  The medium pieces will be used for the shortest part of the wig, the forehead area.

Note: be sure to brush out snarls.  Many times they are usable hairs that have simply become balled up.
Knotting Method

Step 5: Take a small length of hair from your medium pile, and wet the middle section (either with saliva or water).

Step 12: Fold this length in half, and thread it through the eye of a needle.

Step 13: Slide the needle through a small section of wig cap, and pull the needle is all the way through.

Step 14: Slide the needle off the crepe wool.  You will be left with a loop of wool on one side of the cap, and two loose ends on the other.

Step 15: Take the loose ends and pull them through the loop.

Step 16: Pull the ends all the way through so that you have formed a tight knot.

Step 17: Repeat steps 5 through 17 for each color until your wig is complete. Use longer fibers for the wig flaps and ear area (see step 21).
Gluing Method

Step 18:   Knot plug in half.

Step 19: Apply small dab of hot glue to wig cap and attach knotted area to glue.

Step 20: Repeat steps 18 through 20 for each color until wig is complete. Use longer fibers for the wig flaps and ear area (see step 21) .
Creating Ears

Step 21: To create ears, take a pile of longer fibers and bunch them together, securing them with a clear mini ponytail holder.
Styling

Step 22:  Trim and style the wig using a pair of small bathroom or sewing scissors.  Since CATS wigs vary for characters and productions, it would be difficult to write a tutorial for shaping.  Use good judgment, and find as many photographs of your character’s wig as possible for references.  It’s tempting to go scissor-happy, but cutting a little bit at a time is always wiser than one big stroke.  Feathering (similar to cutting a fringe on paper) will give the wig a more natural look than straight cuts will.  I like to cut a small triangular area away from the wig where it sits at your temples; it squares the face like authentic wigs do.

When you are finished, you may see areas that need extra coverage.  You can cover these areas using extra crepe wool with a dab of hot glue.

Step 23: Use styling wax to sculpt stubborn fibers into place, then spray the wig with maximum-hold hairspray.  Let it air out for several days before use or storage.

Tips

An excellent hairspray is AquaNet Extra Super Hold, available at retailers such as Wal-Mart, hair salons, and beauty stores.  It provides a stronger hold than other hairsprays. Be sure to brush your wig as you spray to avoid droplets forming on the wig fibers.
